Exedy Mach 500 (clutch)

I've read that SOME cars need a spacer between the bell housing and the slave cylinder. I was lucky enough not to need that. Sounds like it can be the case for you?

But what a load of & ##$#%%% the MT82 is. Mostly it works fine after the Ben Calimer mix and the new clutch but sometimes when I've just fired the car up and tried to put it in reverse it makes a very unpleasant sound.

Excessive clutch free play will impede full clutch disengagement when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. No free play leads to very early TO brg. failures.

For some reason I don’t see many and/or if any one talk about taking measurements from the engine side of the bell housing mounting surface to the installed pressure plate fingers / diaphragm vs. the bell housing side of the engine mounting surface to the TO bearing (at rest position).

The difference between the 2 should be (+/-) amount of clearance between the TO bearing / clutch PP fingers. Or amount of installed free play.

It beats pulling out the transmission again.

Never had to replace a clutch before so this was a learning experience still in progress. My assumption is as you say that there is too much space at the slave sleeve and not putting enough pressure to the pp fingers. So is the spacer a common fix?

Yes when measured correctly. Sometimes depending on application and shim thickness availability you may have to use more than one shim to attain .100 - .125 1/8” max. clearance. Note: check your PP manufacture for their specs.

Remember a negative clearance means the TO brg. Is riding the PP & = a loss of clamping Force results in slippage.

Use the same straight edge when measuring both measurements & include the width of the straight edge in your measurement to obtain the difference.

OK so it has been 2 years living with the clutch issues mentioned above. We tried a spacer and that did not work, I have been postponing troubleshooting anymore since I don’t drive it much since I bought a Mach E for my daily driver. Last week my mechanic convinced me to just try another clutch. We pulled the Exedy out and put a Mcloud in and problem solved. I drove it today and finally can have fun again. No idea why the Exedy would not work.

Glad you got it worked out. I have been experiencing the same issue since Jan 2021 with my Hyper Single. Long story short I have had everything replaced in the hydraulic system under warranty. Still can’t shift into first or reverse from a stop. Have to turn engine off. Happened to be scrolling in one of the FB groups and someone with the same issue made a post and several other underneath the post stated that changing the Pilot bearing fixed the issue. I looked up symptoms of a bad pilot bearing and sure enough it said that engaging in first or reverse from a stop is a symptom. I bought the Ford Performance High Load pilot bearing ($25). Now time to find time and money to swap it out and hopefully finally solve this puzzle. Just wish I changed it for peace of mind when the dealer dropped the trans for warranty work.

I have a hyper single. It has been virtually flawless as a track clutch. The company that installed it insisted everything had to be renewed when changing it and so no used parts were left in there. I think that may be key. It's a good plan anyway, why leave used stuff in there and risk it failing early?

Yea I agree. I work like that when replacing/upgrading things which is why when I was having the TOB and master cylinder replaced under warranty, I used the opportunity for them to replace the clutch, but I wasn’t too knowledgeable on the matter at the time. Had I known, I would’ve done it. The only thing I would read to replace when doing the clutch was the TOB. Don’t think I ever saw people replacing the Pilot bearing as well. It’s a lesson learned for sure.

What puzzled me was the fact that I did replace everything when I did the original swap including the pilot bearing/slave cylinder and hydraulic line. I am not a clutch guru so I didn’t know what to look for and had to trust the mechanic. Just glad it is now working and good luck with your issue, which is exactly what I was experiencing.
