Weight reduction

OK, I know we have a 3600+ lb car so small weight savings take a while to add up. However, the relatively minor changes I've made (especially for track days) seem to have made an arguably significant dent.

Enkei PF01 wheels/Hoosier R6 295/315:
Front 60 street vs 45 - 15 lbs each x 2 = -30 lbs
Rear 58 street vs 49.2 - 9 lbs each x 2 = -18 lbs
Corsa Extreme axle backs (pair) 54 lbs stock vs 24 lbs = -30 lbs
Kooks Off-Road H-pipe 32 lbs stock vs 17 lbs = -15 lbs
Side pipe delete 5.5 lbs each = -11 lbs
Kooks LT headers vs stock manifolds = + 3lbs
Roll bar, mounts & harness bar +69 lbs.
Rear seat delete kit +12 lbs.
Remove rear seats and belts and factory mounts -54 lbs
Swap to the Tiger Hood -17 lbs
Remove washer bottle incl fluid -8 lbs
Remove flat repair kit -5 lbs
Sparco race seat 35lbs versus stock seat 46lbs = -11 lbs
302S tow hooks +2 lbs
FRPP air-to-oil cooler +8 lbs
1-pc DSS aluminum driveshaft vs stock -21 lbs
DS saftey loop +10 lbs
Trunk liner -7 lbs
Passenger seat -46 lbs (track only)
Watts link versus panhard bar +15 lbs
Rear axle weights -5 lbs
Battery relocation kit +25 lbs
Remove A/C condenser, compressor, lines and belt -21 lbs.

Total weight savings so far is 116 lbs with passenger seat and 162 without it.

With a curb weight of 3630, I'm at 3514 to 3468 with or without the passenger seat.

Dropping 58 lbs for this next track event.

Passenger seat - 46 lbs
Trunk liner - 7 lbs
Flat repair kit - 5 lbs
Hopefully that will help you feast on more P cars. :D

Here is a new one that I doubt anyone thought of, its from the drag racing world...

On my old shelby and rebeccas 5.0l i pulled the rear bump stop brackets to improve clearance for drag wheels. There are about half a dozen spot welds and then this heavy chunk of steel comes off. It looks to only be there for the bump stops and possibly for some type of assembly line use as there is a hole in it that something could hook into it. I would say 8-10lbs total after you ditch the bump stops and bolts too. I know the stops can be a problem on lowered cars.

Anybody look at these?

Decent underhood savings right there.

Interesting. Looks like it would work. I think the stock battery is 38 lbs so would save 17 up front and high in the car. I can't see why I wouldn't get that when my battery goes.

Thinking I'll go with one, reviews are good.

This is a cheap battery I've used in race cars for years (they last about 5 seasons):

...May be too little reserve for a street-driven car, although I have one in a GT3 street car that I keep on a float charger & is just fine.

For extreme weight reduction (& cost):

I almost bought one of these but could not justify the cost in my race budget..

Save the dawn for your dishes!!!
I had a BMR tubular K-member in my 06 GT. Really wasnt that much lighter than the factory one. Only thing I liked about it was you could get to the entire engine easily. The motor mounts are different and more rigid on them so expect more NVH with it. To get the real weight savings you would have to go k-member plus tubular lower control arms with coil overs.

According to [email protected]

"The k member weighs 26lbs.

Everything together saves you 29lbs total.

You will have to use the Kenny Brown arms though. With the Z brace on the 2011, it has the tabs on it so you can still run it as well. This will work with the manual and electronic power steering rack too. Has 3 bungs on it for mounting. Comes with the bolts too. Made to fit aftermarket oil pans."

removing fuel tank evaporative system under spare tire well is worth 20lbs.
I am told that this will not create code errors if the vents are re-connected instead of running through the evap unit but have not tried it yet myself.
(good place to remove weight)

Has anyone removed this yet? Thinking about doing it next weekend. If the CEL is an issue can it be taken care of with a mail order tune from BAMA?

I weighed mine after Gary pulled off the scale.
3750 with 5/8 tank of gas and me.
Throw off 170 for me.

Gary,

was that with the pass seat / trunk junk out of the car?

that's not bad, really...
Yes that's with no passenger seat, (small 2.5lb fire extinguisher and mount attached to the front pass seat bolts), and no trunk mat or fill kit.

Has anyone heard of these?

http://www.kronospark.com/index.php/products-page/mikroh-racing-battery/

definitely track only

...That looks a kick-a** battery at a great price albeit for a dedicated track car.
Will definitely try one of these in my race car (car weighs 2,147 & every ounce helps)
Great tip. Thanks!
